Revd J.E.B. Mayor (1825–1910) was Fellow of St John’s College and became Cambridge’s second professor of Latin.
John Henderson is Professor of Classics, University of Cambridge and Fellow and Director of Studies in Classics of King's College, Cambridge. He is co-author (with Mary Beard) of Classics: A very short introduction (Oxford, 1995) and is the author of many books, including Figuring Out Roman Nobility: Juvenal's Eighth Satire (1997) and A Roman Life: Rutilius Gallicus on Paper and In Stone (1998), both published by University of Exeter Press.
Volume 1 Consists of Mayor's original introduction, John Henderson's new introduction and bibliography, the Latin text of "Juvenal's Satires" and Mayor's commentary on "Satires I-VII". Volume 2 Contains Mayor's commentary on "Satires VIII-XVI". Henderson's introduction, geared to the needs of serious user and occasional browser alike, guides the reader in the use of Mayor's commentary and explains its gestation and the mode of thinking it sought to incarnate. A substantial bibliography on both Mayor and Juvenal is also included.
