Abstract

La lengua de las mariposas (1999), de José Luis Cuerda y Machuca (2004), de Andrés Wood indagan en la historia a través de los ojos de la infancia, estrategia frecuentemente utilizada en el cine y la literatura. A pesar de la aparente semejanza entre sus tramas – los sucesos traumáticos de la historia contemporánea de España y Chile, respectivamente – ambas películas se prestan a la comparación. La lengua de las mariposas representa la Segunda República Española como un período de carnaval y recurre al mito del paraíso perdido, tomando como puntos de partida la inocencia de la infancia y una imagen idílica de la naturaleza. Desde el punto de vista de la teoría psicoanalítica freudiana, esta estrategia provoca una reacción de melancolía a través de una evocación nostálgica. De otro lado, Machuca evidencia el conflicto social bajo el gobierno socialista de Salvador Allende y el subsiguiente golpe de Estado de los militares a través de las experiencias de sus jóvenes protagonistas. De esta manera, el microcosmos de los jóvenes se convierte en una versión reducida de la historia nacional chilena de entonces, invitando al espectador a reflexionar sobre su historia desde una perspectiva crítica. En conclusión, La lengua de las mariposas y Machuca ofrecen interesantes ejemplos de dos diferentes modelos y estilos del cine de infancia que pretenden adentrarse en el corazón de la historia.

José Luis Cuerda’s La lengua de las mariposas (1999) and Andrés Wood’s Machuca (2004) seek to examine history by engaging the eyes of children, which is a filmic/narrative strategy frequently used in cinema and literature. Despite the seemingly similar plots dealing with traumatic events in the contemporary histories of Spain and Chile respectively, the films present two comparable models. La lengua de las mariposas represents the Spanish Second Republic as a carnival period based on the myth of the Lost Paradise. To make a dramatic rendition of the times it ironically underscores the innocence of childhood and an idyllic image of nature. From the point of view of Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis, this strategy provokes a melancholic reaction by evoking nostalgia. Machuca, on the other hand, reveals through the life of young protagonists the social conflict during Salvador Allende’s socialist government and the military coup d’état that followed. The microcosm of the young heroes becomes a reduced version of Chilean national history in that period. Thus, the film invites audiences to meditate on their own histories from a critical perspective. In conclusion, La lengua de las mariposas and Machuca provide intriguing examples of two different representations and styles of childhood cinema which attempt to penetrate to the core of history.
