Modern Believing
Taking Away Sin
Abstract
The Atonement effected by Jesus Christ remains puzzling. It becomes compatible with human reason, and especially with our sense of justice, if we suppose that the divine Incarnation in Christ manifests our Creator’s acknowledgment of His responsibility with us for our sins. We cannot know the extent of divine or human responsibility for sin, so this acknowledgment relieves the burden of sole human responsibility without removing human accountability. This supposition seems to accord with reason, Scripture and the writings of Christian theologians.
