Joseph Gott’s blemished portrait bust of Benjamin Gott: reinterpretation of the archive

Sculpture Journal (2016), 25, (1), 45–64.

Abstract

A recent discovery has necessitated reconsideration of the portrait busts carved by the eminent nineteenth-century British sculptor Joseph Gott of his most important patron. This in turn has led to a review of the archive, resulting in a fresh interpretation of important correspondence between Gott and the son of that patron and a revised exploration of Gott’s relations with the President of the Royal Academy, Sir Thomas Lawrence.
