The Ars Moriendi: A Practical Approach to Dying Well

Modern Believing (2015), 56, (2), 209–222.

Abstract

Perhaps the best way to introduce this paper is to outline the circumstances which inspired it. Following the death of a 92 year old who had been repeatedly resuscitated during a prolonged series of debilitating strokes, robbing her first of her sight and then her mobility, the author was forced to consider the following: as carers, urging the dying to take medication to extend life, are we actually helping them to die well? What ‘good’ are the doctors hoping to achieve when the treatment can be stressful, invasive and ultimately pointless? Where was the Church's support for this important event?
