Sculpture Journal (2013), 22, (2), 33–64.

Abstract

Joaquim Machado de Castro (1731-1822) was the Portuguese royal sculptor best known for his equestrian statue of King Dom José I in Lisbon's main square. Although Machado de Castro worked in many different materials and on many different types of sculpture, he wanted to be recognized as a sculptor a la gran maniera romana. This article seeks to demonstrate the organization of his workshop, and the methodology of work he pursued to attain this goal.
