The future of Quebec in sf film and television

Science Fiction Film & Television (2015), 8, (1), 1–27.

Abstract

After surveying the sporadic production of French-language sf films in Quebec since 1970, this essay examines three significant projects. Dans une galaxie près de chez vous (Desrosiers Canada 2004) successfully couples regional humour with parody, targeting internationally known sf television franchises such as Star Trek. Two ‘straight’ films stewarded by auteur director Robert Lepage directly address the central tropes of sf: La Face cachée de la lune (Lepage Canada 2003) and Mars et Avril (Villeneuve Canada 2012). The analysis describes how these films continue to express a local, ‘Québécois’ sense of cultural identity while reaching out to a more universal audience.
