The Churches in the UK have a long history of political engagement, and, faced with the challenges of extremism and inequality at many levels of society, the voice of reasoned Christian thought and action is still urgently needed. Today's liberal and multicultural values appear to some to compromise Christian commitment, but this paper affirms the need to encourage political engagement and to bring the judgement of the cross to bear on issues such as inequality, social exclusion, discrimination and the powerlessness of significant communities in our society.
