The physical barriers to accessing the documentary heritage at the National Archives of Zimbabwe

Comma (2017), 2017, (2), 85–92.

Abstract

National archival institutions primarily exist to be accessed and used by members of the public. This paper provides a discourse on the physical barriers that are hindering national archival institutions from being fully utilized. The paper is drawn from a doctoral study in which bibliographic, intellectual and physical aspects of accessing and using archives at the National Archives of Zimbabwe (NAZ) were examined; it focuses particularly on the physical barriers to accessing and using archives, as these were found to be amongst the major obstacles hindering NAZ from enhancing the access and use levels of its holdings. The findings of the study indicated that the centralization of NAZ, its reading room and other service fees, failure to repatriate migrated archives and lack of special facilities for the physically challenged were hindering the institution in its desire to improve the utility of the nation’s documentary heritage.
