The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing

Bringing index standards into the twenty-first century

The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing (2019), 37, (1), 37–48.

Abstract

This paper, based on a presentation at the 2018 ASI conference, provides an overview of the landscape of international and US standards and recommended practices relevant to indexers internationally, with additional focus on standards in the United States. A brief orientation to the standards organizations – the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) – is provided. This is followed by an overview of the body of indexing-related standards and a detailed discussion of current ISO and NISO standards for indexes. It concludes with an update on the progress of the ISO index standard revision and a proposal for a NISO index standard revision.
