Fun with Fairies: Representation of Gender Identity in La Cage aux folles and The Birdcage

Australian Journal of French Studies (2012), 49, (2), 167–182.

Abstract

This article compares two mainstream comedies, La Cage aux folles and its American remake The Birdcage, eighteen years later. It focuses on how, in different ways, the films challenge, traditional representations of family, thereby revealing their society's attitude towards gender and family. The analysis is developed through a comparison of three scenes dealing with the same point in the plot in both films. The analysis highlights their different (culturally motivated) styles of narration and their impact on the narrative.
