Abstract

Arrebato (1979), del director vasco Iván Zulueta, fue rodada en el período de la Transición española con un equipo de jóvenes que participaron del ideario contracultural de la Movida. En contraste con la euforia que normalmente sugiere este fenómeno en España, la película de Zulueta retrata personajes atormentados y espacios fantasmagóricos. Este trabajo examina el subtexto vampírico-fantasmal del film y el éxtasis que experimentan sus personajes a causa del consumo de heroína y de la contemplación de objetos de la infancia. Estos elementos, junto con el protagonismo que cobra el montaje en la trama de la película, constituyen los que hemos llamado ‘espacios de ausencia’, y remiten al concepto de hauntology (‘hauntología’) de Jacques Derrida. Considerando esta teoría, el artículo sostiene que el componente espectral del film y su reflexión sobre el cine evocan la traumática construcción de la memoria en la España posfranquista.

Arrebato (1979) directed by Iván Zulueta, was filmed during the period of the Spanish Transition to democracy, with a young crew who took part in the countercultural ideology of la Movida. In contrast with the euphoria that this Spanish movement usually suggests, Zulueta’s film depicts tormented characters and ghostly spaces. This paper examines the vampiric-ghostly subtext in the film and the rapture experimented by the characters due to heroin use and to the contemplation of childhood objects. These elements, together with the prominence of editing in the movie’s plot, constitute what we designate ‘spaces of absence’, and they recall Jacques Derrida’s concept of hauntology. Considering this theory, this article argues that the spectral component of the film, together with the reflection on cinema, evoke the traumatic construction of memory in Post-Franco Spain.
