Building the archives profession in Brazil
Abstract
This article examines the state of archival education and training in Brazil in relation to the regulations concerning qualifications governing the employment of archivists. It argues that the educational qualifications required to be a professional archivist act as a barrier to knowledgeable and experienced archivists following a logical career development progression. These systemic barriers mean that the Brazilian labour market is experiencing a chronic inability to place personnel with the right archives and records management skills into positions of critical importance to society and to public administration.
