Initial-language teacher education in Europe: best practices and recommendations for restructuring language teacher education in Greece

Abstract

This article aims to illuminate the structure of initial-language teacher education in 26 European countries and to identify similarities and differences between different countries on issues concerning the structure of teacher training programs and the necessary minimum requirements in order for somebody to be qualified to work as a foreign-language teacher in secondary education. The article concludes that there is a great deal of variation between countries concerning the qualifications needed to enter the teaching profession. The article traces best practices and proposes models for restructuring initial-language teacher education in Greece.
