Extrapolation

What is the Holocaust doing in German Science Fiction?

Extrapolation (2014), 55, (2), 221–243.

Abstract

The essay examines Wolfgang Bachschneider's "Das digitale Dachau" (1984), Thomas Ziegler's Die Stimmen der Nacht (1994), and Andreas Eschbach's Die Haarteppichknüpfer (1995)—the last a winner of a German science fiction prize. It views the texts in their historical and cultural contexts—particularly vis-à-vis the German understanding of the Holocaust—and discusses how three German works of science fiction manage the discourses around the Holocaust: the purposes signs from the Holocaust serve in these texts, how they reflect the event itself, and what kind of attention they pay to our ethical responsibility towards it.
