Sartre rereading Proust

Journal of Romance Studies (2006), 6, (1-2), 197–207.

Abstract

Sartre resists Proust’s philosophy of interiority and aesthetic idealism to explore contingent existence through nausea, an ‘alimentary philosophy’. In La Nausée Sartre rereads À la recherche du temps perdu and distances himself from the Enlightenment, the Cartesian subject, humanism, and phenomenology. Two narratives of failure emerge: love as freedom of self and other, and certainty as the basis of writing and existence.
