Sartre’s body parts: ‘Intimité’ as existential angst

Journal of Romance studies (2006), 6, (1-2), 185–196.

Abstract

In Jean-Paul Sartre’s story ‘Intimité’, ultimately included in the volume Le Mur, the protagonist, Lulu, embodies sensuality as she is drawn largely into an autoerotic world of her own creation. Bodies and body parts are given prominence in this story, in very physical and direct ways, but the representation of the body is often modified through consciousness and subjectivity and this distortion, figured through discours indirect libre, becomes the focus of the story.
