Sartre and Beauvoir: an intellectual passion

Journal of Romance Studies (2006), 6, (1-2), 105–113.

Abstract

The famous Sartre-Beauvoir relationship, organized according to a carefully devised philosophical ‘pact’, might not have been sexually charged, but it was certainly based on a mutual passion for life, ideas and writing. This article argues that, contrary to popular opinion, their open relationship benefited Beauvoir even more than Sartre, and that Sartre needed Beauvoir even more than she needed him.
