‘Entre dos fuegos’: the function of Teresa and the possible subplot in El espíritu de la colmena

Journal of Romance Studies (2007), 7, (2), 99–122.

Abstract

The character of Teresa in El espíritu de la colmena (Víctor Erice, 1973) has been almost ignored until quite recently. Implicit in the sparse criticism – whether it be from a feminist viewpoint, or that written in a rather less sophisticated but curious vein of plot speculation – is the notion of her ‘betrayal’ if not of her gender, certainly of her household and husband. By exploring these perspectives and the possibility of a subplot in the film, at the centre of which Teresa is thought by some critics to operate, this essay seeks to reappraise her complex narrative function as a catalyst of still-pertinent sociocultural themes which suffuse the film, but which have become subsumed into contiguous, and some argue biased or ‘interested’, critical enterprises.
