The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing

In defense of multiple indexes: or the index as learning tool

The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing (2013), 31, (4), 153–158.

Abstract

An index is commonly regarded by indexers and academics as a retrieval device: it provides the answer – or it points to the answer – to a question the reader might have. The most effective way to answer that question is to provide a unified index with specific headings. Florian Ehrensperger argues that if the reader wants to explore rather than to consult the text, multiple indexes are preferable. Instead of satisfying specific information needs, they provide learning opportunities for the curious reader.
