The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing

Newspaper archives: indexing Cumhuriyet

The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing (2011), 29, (4), 171–179.

Abstract

Newspaper indexing provides a gate to the first-hand history of daily events of our past and current times. Often, the primary users of a newspaper index are the journalists who work for that paper themselves. It is vital to prompt retrieval that standard sets of terms be used – via a simple controlled vocabulary, a taxonomy or a thesaurus – within that newspaper’s archive. Here, Meral Alakuş describes the issues surrounding newspaper indexing in general, with specific examples from Turkey’s national newspaper, Cumhuriyet.
