A new dwelling: reimagining the city in a Spanish feminist context

Journal of Romance Studies (2007), 7, (1), 39–58.

Abstract

Explorations of the ‘imagined city’ – the version of the city that exceeds its built environment – have informed contemporary texts that seek to reimagine cities in order to make them more hospitable to a range of inhabitants. This article looks at the some of the ways in which Spanish second-wave feminists have reconceived women’s relationships to cities, as a stimulus to change at the levels of representation and materiality. It looks in particular at the role that ‘difference’-feminist discourse plays in this project, and uses Spanish feminist practice to reflect on the role of the body and knowledge in the imagined city.
