Abstract

OZBIB: a Linguistic Bibliography of Aboriginal Australia and the Torres Strait Islands, compiled by Lois Carrington and Geraldine Triffitt, was originally published by Pacific Linguistics, Australian National University in 1999. Its basis was the combining of a number of published bibliographies and the library catalogue of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS). Additional entries were sorted by contacting authors directly, sending them copies of their entries and asking for additional items or amendments. This personal touch, facilitated by emails and personal websites, was used even more in the supplement to OZBIB prepared in 2005–06 for the AUSTLANG database which AIATSIS will mount on its website. OZBIB will provide the bibliographical structure behind the language database. Mounting OZBIB on the Internet provides a case study for describing hopythetical copyright issues.
