The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing (2009), 27, (3), 101–102.

Abstract

Wen Guoqiang and Guo Lifang describe how, in 2005, the China Society of Indexers (CSI) embarked upon the preparation of China’s first national indexing standard with the aim of improving the quality of indexing in China and hence the retrieval and effective utilization of the national database. Reference was made to ISO 999:1996, to Chinese standards in related areas, to actual indexing experience in China, and to work on the Chinese writing and filing system. The new standard came into effect on 1 April 2009, an important step, marking the latest phase in China’s long history of taking indexing seriously.
