Abstract

The topic maps model is an ISO standard often presented as a semantic web technology aimed at knowledge management, but its origins lie in indexing. This article introduces the key concepts of topic maps, relates them to back-of-the-book indexing, and explores some of the possibilities of using a model such as topic maps to separate index content from presentation to meet the challenges of publishing index information in multiple formats.
