The “words inside”

“Disabled” Voices in Contemporary Literature for Young People

Journal of Literary & Cultural Disability Studies (2017), 11, (2), 187–203.

Abstract

The article explores recently published coming of age texts for young people using a range of lenses to focus on the real and fictional “disabled” voices that articulate their right to societal inclusion. The stuttered, cleft-lipped, and autistic words of the protagonists are considered for the ways in which they dramatize the experiences and effects of linguistic ableism as well as authorial messages that may counter or uphold this form of discrimination.
