Greek Roma social performance, resistance and conflict resolution: The case of a Roma trial

Romani Studies (2006), 16, (2), 153–167.

Abstract

This article explores cultural and political issues surrounding the trial of a son-in-law who killed his pregnant wife. My aim is to explore, on the basis this social event, Greek Roma's social performance as a form of resistance and a means to release tension in times of conflict. I discuss Romani performance both in terms of the social interactions among the members of the Romani community in Ano Liossia and in terms of Romani interactions with non-Gypsies in their various contexts. My argument here is that Romani social performances in social interactions are manifestations of the Greek Romani culture and identity.
