South of the future: an overview of Latin American science fiction cinema

Science Fiction Film & Television (2008), 1, (1), 81–103.

Abstract

This article introduces the main trends in Latin American science fiction cinema. Focusing on the films produced in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina (the countries with the largest film industries in the region), it offers a descriptive analysis of the central characteristics of these works and argues that Latin American sf films make use of the narrative and iconographic conventions of American sf, articulating them with local and regional cultural elements and traditions. It concludes by offering some notes toward how the concept of hybridity might be useful for further the study of this cinema.
