Building capacity for public health and population policy-making: perspectives from Zambia

International Development Planning Review (2015), 37, (1), 61–76.

Abstract

National and international attempts to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities have often been hampered by the limited capacity among public health personnel. This paper describes the role of universities in building capacity for public health in Africa, with particular reference to Zambia. It highlights factors affecting public health and the impetus for institutional inputs of population health knowledge and skill capacity in the development of a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Population Studies at the University of Zambia. The demand for this programme demonstrates its relevance and the need to strengthen national health systems and population policy-making.
