Henri Cartier-Bresson and a photographic Mexico

Journal of Romance Studies (2008), 8, (1), 7–17.

Abstract

This article analyses a selection of photographs taken by Henri Cartier-Bresson during his residency and travels whilst in Mexico in the years 1934–5 and 1964 respectively. The images in question reveal an acute awareness of the cultural and socio-political contexts consistent with the timing of the photographs, achieved despite the relatively short amount of time spent in the country. Cartier-Bresson’s captured moments and the contents within the frame expose a dialogic relationship between object, subject (matter) and photographer, offering a plurality of signifiers and, in return, multidimensional readings.
