Urgency and visions of the New Italian Epic

Journal of Romance Studies (2010), 10, (1), 7–18.

Abstract

Cognitive mutations, confusion of perception and mediatic overexposure are the new elements that literature offers to confront the new millennium. This is the kind of challenge that cannot be met by the strategies proposed by postmodern culture. This article takes as its starting point the idea that, in the internet society in which we are currently living, literature can still play a very specific role. Bearing this in mind, the interpretative hypothesis of the New Italian Epic is considered as an effort to express a specific sense of urgency in literature. It is an attempt which, on the one hand, overcomes any apocalyptic ideas that can be associated with the consequences of technological development, and, on the other, proposes a repositioning of literature at the centre of the social life of a community.
