Reviving historical Cairo through pedestrianisation: The al-Azhar Street axis

International Development Planning Review (2003), 25, (4), 407–431.

Abstract

The al-Azhar Street axis was a major traffic route through and into Old Cairo. Now that a tunnel has been constructed to take through traffic it has been proposed that the street should be pedestrianised along with adjacent squares. The pedestrianisation scheme is assessed in terms of the views of various stakeholder groups including residents, merchants and planners. An alternative, less drastic pedestrianisation scheme is suggested, one that would favour continued commercial and residential functions rather than encouraging gentriication trends. The rehabilitation of Old Cairo remains a delicate and controversial issue.
