A Note on Biblical Referencing in Los mercaderes by Ana María Matute

Abstract

Despite being written some forty years ago, Ana María Matute's trilogy Los mercaderes still stands as her most critically examined literary effort. The continued interest, however, has not been without its sense of fatuity, a point vividly illustrated by the diverse and often contradictory critical discussion of Matute's choice of the term 'mercaderes' for her title. The intention of this article is to resume an investigation suggested in past critical studies such as 'Religious Motifs and Biblical Allusions in the Work of Ana María Matute' (Jones: 1968) and 'Temas bíblicos en la obra de Ana María Matute' (Fernández: 1979) by identifying New Testament source material and proposing possible reasons for Matute's choice of the 'mercader' symbol in the title of her trilogy. Rather than a hermeneutic, the study is carried out in the form of literary commentary with biblical matter as its basis. The analysis of the 'mercader' symbol is made explicit through a discussion of its relationship to thematic content in the first two novels of the Los mercaderes: Primera memoria and Los soldados lloran de noche.

Pese a haber sido escrita hace más de cuarenta años, la trilogía de Ana María Matute, Los mercaderes, todavía está considerada como una de sus obras literarias más estudiadas. Sin embargo, el interés continuo en la obra no carece de un sentido de fatuidad; un aspecto vivamente ilustrado en los diversos y, en ocasiones, contradictorios debates críticos centrados en la elección del término 'mercaderes' como título para su trilogía. El objetivo de este artículo es ofrecer un resumen de la investigación llevada a cabo en estudios críticos anteriores como por ejemplo: 'Religious Motifs and Biblical Allusions in the Work of Ana María Matute' (Jones: 1968) y 'Temas bíblicos en la obra de Ana María Matute' (Fernández: 1979). El presente artículo identificará las fuentes del Nuevo Testamento y ofrecerá posibles razones que justifiquen la elección del término 'mercader' como símbolo en el título de su trilogía. La presente investigación toma forma de comentario literario, más que de comentario hermenéutico, y tomará el aspecto bíblico como base. El análisis del símbolo 'mercader' se manifiesta claramente en el debate sobre su relación con el contenido temático en las dos primeras novelas de Los mercaderes: Primera memoria y Los soldados lloran de noche.
