Ronaldo Correia de Brito’s Galiléia and ethno-racial identity in northeastern Brazil

Journal of Romance Studies (2017), 17, (1), 89–107.

Abstract

This article explores ethno-racial identity in Brazilian writer Ronaldo Correia de Brito’s novel Galiléia (2008). Focusing primarily on the mestiço character Ismael, it draws on anthropological and ethnographic research into ethnic and racial identity in northeastern Brazil, while recognizing the complex relationship between contemporary Brazilian literature and issues pertaining to urban, rural, regional, and national spheres. It argues that the novel presents a parodic rewriting of one of Brazil’s founding novels, José de Alencar’s Iracema (1864), exposing the persistence of Portuguese colonial rhetoric in Brazilian society today. At the same time, it explores the novel’s engagement with global discussions about the (mis)representation of indigenous identity.
