Re-discovering History in Lourdes Ortiz's Urraca

Bulletin of Hispanic Studies (2007), 84, (2), 179–196.

Abstract

This article discusses the ways in which Lourdes Ortiz's historical novel Urraca (1982) challenges conventional perceptions of medieval Iberian culture. It highlights Francoist Spanish History's manipulation of the past and vindicates literature's potential as a productive strategy to approach History. The article stresses the novel's representation of this historical period in the development of Spanish cultural identity as essentially intercultural; something particularly relevant to contemporary Spain. It argues that the novel demonstrates the importance of establishing a dialogue with the past and the impossibility of ascertaining a truth in a final totalizing account of History, foregrounding current debates on the role of History and the need to recover certain aspects of Spain's historical past.
