Throwing Stones at Our Own Roof: Approaching Metacritical Concern in Anglo-American Hispanism

Bulletin of Hispanic Studies (2007), 84, (2), 161–178.

Abstract

This paper aims to offer a theoretical and historical introduction to the practice of metacriticism, here understood as the mode of scholarly inquiry whereby criticism itself (its texts, its institutions and its practitioners) is placed under scrutiny. The study focuses on how this practice has taken shape within Hispanic Studies and on the ways in which it has often generated brisk and heated debate among researchers, or else been met with unaccommodating suspicion. In view of the tentative, yet decidedly emerging practice of metacriticism within Anglo-American Hispanism (of which a series of recent manifestations will be reviewed), this paper aims to present a necessary grounding for its further establishment, as well as a series of new avenues for research in this vein.
