Abstract

Indexing is a demanding and generally solitary activity requiring particular combinations of mental skills. Drusilla Calvert (indexer) and Joan Abbott (neuroscientist) became interested in the extent to which modern understanding of brain function can give indexers insights into their own mental activities, and possibly help them to work more efficiently and enjoyably. This article summarizes some key points. It is based on a talk given at the Society of Indexers Annual Conference in Durham, July 2006.
