Acceptable hospitality: from Rousseau’s Levite to the strangers in our midst today

Journal of Romance Studies (2003), 3, (2), 1–14.

Abstract

This article analyses a range of definitions of hospitality in general and in its intersection with sexual difference. It draws on recent work on hospitality by Jacques Derrida and other philosophers. It then takes the case study of Rousseau, citing in particular the little-known fragment ‘Sur les richesses’ and the prose poem Le Lévite d’Ephraïm which is a tale of hospitality transgressed. Present-day issues that relate to hospitality and to the consequences of transgression, for example, the questions of refugees and of war, are briefly evoked.
