Time, Deixis and Poetic Performance in Late Medieval Castile: 'La pelea que ovo don Carnal con la Quaresma'

Bulletin of Hispanic Studies (2005), 82, (4), 411–428.

Abstract

Focusing on the Pelea's elaboration of issues related to time and temporality at both the denotational and pragmatic levels of signification, the present study examines evidence of the socially embedded, interactive processes by which the episode took on meaning during the medieval period. In specific terms, I seek to shed light on the eminently social processes by which human beings — narrators, readers, the (by no means passive) listening public — engaged the Pelea as a means of collaboratively reckoning with time and subsequently giving shape to communal theories of reality, practical action, and experience. Approaching the Pelea as a text designed to mediate concrete, situated acts of narrative poetic performance, the present study also offers an analysis of the principal discursive tools by which the episode effected such mediation.
