And whatever happened with Brazil?

An analysis of some of the forces that led Brazil to the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff and the rise of Jair Bolsonaro

Theory & Struggle (2020), 121, (1), 86–97.

Abstract

This article looks at some of the internal and external factors that led to the removal of President Dilma Rousseff and the rise of the extreme right in Brazil. I argue that Brazil has been a testing ground for some of the new tactics used by the right to win elections. However, external forces are not the only reasons for what took place in Brazil. Its history and recent past continue to affect the thinking of the Brazilian elite, who preferred to vote for a demagogue than see the Workers’ Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores, PT) back in power.
