Abstract

Depuis le début des années quatre-vingt, la notion de différence—qu'elle soit de nature sexuelle, ethnique ou autre—a couvert tout entier le champ de la critique théâtrale canadienne. Le sujet qui a le plus enrichi ce discours de la différence est sans doute celui de la spécificité culturelle. De nombreux critiques, tel que Robert Wallace (Producing Marginality, 1990), ont écrit de longs articles visant à établir une distinction précise entre les pratiques théâtrales québécoise et canadienne-anglaise. Bien qu'intéressante à plusieurs égards, cette approche comporte un inconvénient majeur, c'est-à-dire qu'elle prône le rejet de tout rapport analogique entre les dramaturgies québécoise et canadienne. Le présent article tente de contrebalancer cette fascination pour la différence en comparant deux pièces de théâtre—l'une canadienne, l'autre québécoise—qui partagent plusieurs propriétés thématiques et structurais, tout en demeurant hautement représentatives de leur répertoire respectif. Le but implicite de cet essai est de démontrer qu'il serait erroné de prétendre qu'il n'existe pas de concordance idéologique entre les deux plus importantes communautés culturelles du Canada.
