The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing

The indexes of 18th and early 19th-century magazines

The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing (1985), 14, (3), 160–163.

Abstract

For students of the 18th and early 19th century the magazines that proliferated after the advent of the Gentleman’s magazine in 1731 are valuable sources. Accessing the mass of information contained in them, however, is limited by the quality of indexing. Some of the most popular magazines and their indexes are described, as well as some problems researchers may encounter.
