Compiling a general index to Sussex Archaeological Collections

The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing (1990), 17, (2), 83–90.

Abstract

The writer recently compiled the fifth in a series of general indexes to Sussex Archaeological Collections of which the first appeared in 1874. The index, of c. 26,000 entries, was compiled manually, typed on an Amstrad PCW 8512, and printed from disk. This paper discusses the background to the commissioning of the index, the various problems that arose in compiling a journal index of this type and scale, and the mechanics of compilation and production.
