Abstract

In the early 1990s, due to the introduction of neoliberalism Argentina experienced socioeconomic transformations that affected gender roles, particularly men's roles. In this article, I analyse two films by Adolfo Aristarain, Un lugar en el mundo and Martín (Hache), exploring changes in the paternal role and the contradictions that the father exhibits in these films. I argue that the father has held a type of masculinity shaped by the model of letrado. Here I use the concept coined by ángel Rama to name intellectuals who took part in the consolidation of Latin American nations. Because of their close ties to the state, the hegemonic masculinity of letrados was displaced by the neoliberal discourse that validated a reduced role of the state. This shift impacted traditional masculinities. Aristarain's films survey this process and expose the transformations in the paternal role as allegories of the metamorphoses undergone by the Argentine state in the 1990s.

Al principio de la década de 1990 y debido a la adopción de una política neoliberal, tuvieron lugar en Argentina transformaciones socioeconómicas que afectaron roles de género, especialmente los roles masculinos. En este artículo analizo dos películas de Adolfo Aristarain, Un lugar en el mundo y Martín (Hache), que describen cambios en el rol paterno y las contradicciones que los hombres exhiben en los años 1990. Sostengo que los padres en estas películas han modelado su rol del de los letrados. Aqui utilizo el concepto acuñado por ángel Rama para nombrar a los intelectuales que han tomado parte en la formación y consolidación de las naciones latinoamericanas. Por sus estrechos vínculos con el estado, la masculinidad hegemónica de los letrados ha sido desplazada por el discurso neoliberal que sostiene un rol reducido del estado. Propongo que las películas que estudio de Aristarain no sólo representan el cambio en las masculinidades tradicionales sino que dicho cambio puede ser entendido como una alegoría de la reducción del estado en tiempos neoliberales.
