The art of Gothic ivories: studies at the crossroads
Abstract
Building on the impressive gains in the study of Gothic ivories in the last decades, scholars can now turn to the reassessment of long-dismissed works. Three groups of objects are here re-evaluated and found to be genuine works of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. New information gleaned from radiocarbon analysis, studies of polychromy and heraldic research bolsters stylistic analysis to reincorporate these works into the canon of Gothic ivories.
