Abstract

The author’s attempt in his research to use the index of The complete tradesman: a study of retailing, 1550–1820 (Nancy C. Cox, 2000) resulted only in adverse encounters. This article outlines some of the concepts of classification as they apply to book indexing, and illustrates how The complete tradesman’s use of classification makes its index dysfunctional.1
